The Great Rotto Adventure, Saturday 21 March
On Saturday 21 March, 21 kids of the boarding community plus five adults and Joshua Foster, underwent a recreation activity all the way to Rottnest Island. Everyone was excited for a full day out in the sun snorkeling and having fun around the settlement of Rottnest.
But before we could do that we had to take a boat trip. We took the Rottnest express to Rotto. It was a great cruise but the only downside was that the ocean was forecasted to be a little rough. As a result some of the boys got a little seasick.
When we got to Rottnest island, joy could be seen from some of the boys as they disembarked the boat. We then walked to the bus stop and embarked on another journey. Instead of being on a boat, it was on a bus. The bus went around the whole island but we stopped at Parker Point. We all got out and had big group meeting. After that, we all went down to the beach were we all got ready to snorkel.
We were split into three groups of seven. The first group was supervised by Mr Foster and Mr McGurk. As they were underway with their snorkeling, the second group was getting ready to start their snorkeling adventure. I was in the second group. As soon as the first group got halfway through their adventure, it was time to start our own adventure. As we snorkeled, we saw lots of different species of fish and coral but especially, lots of seaweed. By the time we got back, the first group was already munching their way on the food and making themselves comfortable. The third group then started their adventure as the rest of us just chilled on the beach and ate our lunches. Some of us decided to go up and see the Quakers. There were three of them. Everyone was hanging around them as if they were part of the group. As the third group got back from their adventure, we all started to get ready for the second leg of our journey.
We took the bus from Parker Point. The bus then took us on a journey around the island until we got back to the settlement of Rottnest. We then had some free time to wonder around the settlement. Just about all of us got something to eat since the lunch that we got from the kitchen wasn’t too fancy. At ten to four, everyone met up at a big anchor right in front of the jetty. Some of us wanted a last minute dip of a jetty. So Ed took them to a jetty and watched them as they ran the full length of the jetty and dive right into the water.
Once they got back, we all had a bit of a rest at the anchor. When Mr McGurk got back, we then started to walk to the boat with him in front of us as he was the one with the tickets. This time the sea wasn’t as rough and as a result the boys didn’t get as seasick as last time. The boat then stopped at the E sheds and we all got out to find that there was a bus waiting for us to drive us back to the boarding house.
Special thanks must be mentioned to Mr McGurk and Ed for organising the day, Mr Foster and Joe for looking after the boys, also for Ken Spillmen, our author of the day. On behalf of the boys, we hope that more of these great recreational activities will show up in the near future.
