Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you had a restful break and found time to recharge away from the usual routines. This was the first time the Christ Church community experienced a three-week break, and by all accounts it was well received by staff and families. It was also the first time we had alignment with the PSA and IGSSA school with the holiday dates; this was done to support families who have children at different independent schools. This term is shaping up to be a busy and exciting one, especially for our Year 12 students as they prepare for their final exams.

Before the holidays, a group of our talented music students travelled to Adelaide to take part in the Australian Combined Schools Music Festival. This event was a wonderful celebration of music, providing our students with the chance to collaborate with peers from across the country. They enjoyed a range of rehearsals and activities throughout the city, making memories and honing their craft.

In the final week of Term 2, I had the privilege of travelling with Council Chair Chris Stavrianou and Director of Planning and Co-Curricular Jamie Foster to Belmont, Massachusetts, for the International Boys’ Schools Coalition Annual Conference. This was a fantastic opportunity to connect with colleagues from boys’ schools around the world, share insights, and discuss the unique challenges we face. We were honoured to present on the topic of ‘Ensuring a Future for Boys’ Schools’, ie collaboration with girls’ schools, and returned with fresh perspectives on the value our school provides and knowledge that Christ Church is a leading school in this area.

On the first weekend of the school holidays, a team of Year 9 students travelled to Sydney to compete in the prestigious national Da Vinci Decathlon, hosted by Knox Grammar School. The eight students qualified for the event after winning their year level in the WA State Competition. The students placed first in English and Codebreaking, second in Creative Producers, and third in Mathematics, finishing third overall.  This is a fantastic achievement and I commend them on their efforts. During the holidays, our sailing team represented the School at the Australian Secondary School Team Sailing Championships in South Australia. Despite facing a highly competitive field and challenging, cold conditions, the team delivered an impressive performance, finishing tenth overall. Read more

This week, Dr Justin Coulson is visiting our Year 11 and 12 students to offer practical advice on making the most of their final years at school. Organised by our Centre for Health and Wellbeing, these sessions will help students balance academic and co-curricular commitments with their social lives during this important time.

Tomorrow, our community will gather in the Chapel for a special confirmation and baptism ceremony, led by Reverend Nicholas Russell. It promises to be a memorable evening as we celebrate this significant milestone for members of our community.

I look forward to catching up with you this term.

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope that you enjoyed the three-week break. I was glad to witness our students in good spirits and wearing their uniform with pride on Tuesday as they returned from holidays. It is always nice to catch-up and exchange holiday stories before settling into the routines of another busy and exciting term. The odd presentation reminder to start the term is often necessary, and parent support with reinforcing our high presentation standards is always appreciated.

During the holidays, parents will have received academic school reports. It is important that our Senior School students take the time to read this report carefully, and in consultation with classroom teachers, tutors, and parents, ensure any areas of improvement are targeted promptly for better outcomes. A review of their goals set at the beginning of the year is important, and for some this may mean re-stating these goals for the coming term. What is important is that our students take responsibility for their performance and constantly plan their time to be organised and ready to meet the challenges that lie ahead. The tutors are looking forward to the various conversations with you and your son at the upcoming Parent/Student/Tutor evening.

This morning, I spoke with our Year 11 cohort inviting them to apply for prefect positions in 2026. Should your son wish to pursue such a role, he will need to review the information on Student Nexus carefully, have a discussion with his Head of House and complete an online application form. We look forward to receiving these applications.

As communicated, the Senior School campus is now phone free. Students have been reminded that phones are to be placed in their locker on their arrival at school until the end of their school day / sport / activity. It was very pleasing to walk around the campus before school and during the days breaks and see students conversing with each other rather than with their heads in their phones. A reminder that should you need to contact your son during the day to do so via email or Main Reception.

Welcome back to Term 3. I trust all families enjoyed a restful break. Term 3 is always busy with a range of activities and events occurring. Events in Term 3 include the Speaker’s Challenge finals, House Shout, ICAS Competitions, Grandparents Day, NAIDOC Week, Book Week, Science Week, Year 6 Market Day, the Year 6 Production and Open Night.

Beyond the busyness of the Preparatory School, we place a large emphasis within our daily timetable on our literacy skills, as it is imperative that boys develop rich vocabulary, a range of sentence structures and are exposed to themes that are age and stage appropriate. The Talk for Reading and Talk for Writing models are powerful, evidence-based approaches to teaching literacy. They are highly effective as they are grounded in oral language development, assisting boys to internalise language patterns, build vocabulary, and develop a strong sense of story and structure. As a School, we use these models to build confidence and fluency, develop critical skills such as inferencing and comprehension, and foster creativity through independent writing and reading. By combining talk, imitation, innovation, and independent application, both programs provide a rich and supportive framework for literacy growth.

For parents of boys in Years 3 and 5, the 2025 NAPLAN results are now available for you to access in your Nexus account, using your existing credentials. As a School, we use the NAPLAN testing data as part of our broader collection of data to assist in the development of our learning programs. The Nexus portal can be accessed here. If you have any issues accessing the portal, please contact the ARC Service Desk on 9442 1787 or servicedesk@ccgs.wa.edu.au.

Registrations for the 2025 ICAS Competitions are open until 28 July. If you are interested in registering your son for the ICAS Competitions in Digital Technologies, Writing, English, Science, Spelling or Mathematics, information and registration can be found here.

Each term our Parent Forums provide parents with opportunities to raise matters, ask questions, listen to guest speakers from across the School and connect with the Head of the Preparatory School. The topic for the third meeting for 2025 will cover the Phases of Learning.
