May I extend a warm welcome to our new Christ Church families and a welcome back to our existing families. I hope the break allowed everyone to spend valuable time with their families and enjoy essential rest in preparation for the academic year ahead. I would also like to extend a welcome to the new staff joining us this year.

Saturday’s New Students’ Orientation Day was a great success as students and their parents met with their Heads of House and Tutors. It was great to have mild weather and the event provided an important foundation for their journey at Christ Church. We have continued the tradition of Week 1 being a ‘Transition Week’ for Year 7 students. This week is all about discovering the School, learning about their subjects, the roles people play, how to get around the campus, providing time for play, and developing their understanding about their device. The aim is to ensure they are ready to hit the ground running for a full week of academic classes commencing in Week 2.

During the early stages of the school year, it is very important to establish good communication with Tutors and Heads of House. Our Parent/Tutor/Student Interviews for Years 8 to 12 in Week 4 on Monday 19 February will provide a formal opportunity for this, with meetings to identify opportunities and set goals for 2024. The process of reflecting on last year’s school report and goal setting is very important for students to grasp as they set about improving and achieving their personal best.

We are straight back into PSA sport fixtures, with the local derby first up against Scotch this weekend. The first teams have been training hard over the holidays, and I’m sure their efforts will pay off this weekend as they face their Scotch rivals. I would like to highlight mouthguard fittings being held on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 February. Having a mouthguard fitted for certain sports is a requirement for participation. Please see booking information in your son’s Year Group notices.

Lastly, a reminder to parents of Year 11 and 12 students of the process for registering their son for driving to school. Please ensure that you complete the electronic form that can be accessed via the Parent Nexus Page.

Year 3 AFL Carnival – Thursday 22 August

All Year 3 boys will be participating in the AFL Carnival with Hale School, Aquinas and Scotch College. Students will each play two games of twelve-a-side AFL Auskick. Scores will not be kept as this is a participation-based event and teams are chosen at random. The purpose of the carnival program is to further develop sportsmanship, respect for others and character and to have fun. These carnivals are designed to cater for students of all abilities and experience levels.

Time: 12.45pm to 2.30pm
Venue: Aquinas College
To bring: Normal PE/sport uniform, hat, clearly labelled water bottle and mouthguard. Boys are allowed to wear football boots, but not compulsory.

Year 4 Rugby Carnival – Thursday 29 August

All Year 4 boys will be participating in the Rugby Carnival with Hale School and Scotch College. Students will each play three games of seven-a-side Viva 7’s Rugby (non-contact). Scores will not be kept as this is a participation-based event. The purpose of the carnival program is to further develop sportsmanship, respect for others and character and to have fun. These carnivals are designed to cater for students of all abilities and experience levels.

Venue: Hale School

Teachers involved in sport and co-curricular activities are trying to exit the carpark at the end of the day, and when held up this impacts the safety and care of students at off-site venues.

During Week 1 of Term 3, all Year 6 parents will receive an email from Admissions containing subject selection information.

Please read the Academic Handbook that will be linked in the email, and then follow the link to complete your son’s subject selection. Only a Language (French, Japanese, Mandarin) and Music (General or Advanced) selection is required

Important: Music advanced is for students who can read music and play an instrument already. Music general is for those with no previous music experience outside of class lessons.

- Your son must be collected from outside Main Reception. Should they become unwell, they MUST sign out and be collected from the Health Centre.

The postponed House Teams Carnival from Term 2 will now take place on Thursday 25 July from 1.30pm. Please confirm with your son what sport they are playing and see below for the correct venue.

Return bus transportation will be provided, however, if your son is departing from the venue, please inform Absentees again before 5.00pm on Wednesday 24 July. Buses will depart respective venues from 4.00pm.

Each venue will have a check-out area with Junior fixtures scheduled to finish at 3.50pm.

Please note we will not be able to dismiss any Years 7 to 9 students unless Absentees have been notified, or you are present at the check-out area. Please ensure the arrangements are clear with your son.

Students are permitted to wear their House polos and CCGS tracksuits all day.

Complete Vaccinate WA online consent form – deadline extended until 31 July

The Western Australian Government’s School-Based Immunisation Program team are visiting Christ Church on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 August to offer the scheduled vaccinations to Year 7 students.

Parents who have not yet registered their son/s: Regardless of your decision to give or decline consent for your son to receive these vaccinations through this program, you must complete the Vaccinate WA online consent form by Wednesday 31 July. Please note the School has extended this deadline for an additional month to offer remaining parents ample opportunity to complete the form and the additional time to do so over the July school holidays.

Missed Assessments due to illness

With the winter months now here, this is a timely reminder of our assessment procedures if your son misses an assessment due to illness.

2.3 Absence from a scheduled assessment task in Years 10, 11 and 12 due to illness or injury must be ratified by a medical certificate (issued by a medical practitioner (not a pharmacist) other than a family member), submitted directly to the Studies Office within 48 hours of the day of the assessment. Boarders may provide a note from the School Medical Centre. The Studies Office will advise the relevant Head of House, tutor and teachers of the dates covered by the medical certificate and the student will be temporarily excused from the assessment but may be asked to complete it or a comparable assessment, following their return to school or later in the year, depending on the circumstances. These small group sessions give ATAR students quality academic support which will reinforce and consolidate skills and processes learnt in class. They are an excellent way of consolidating syllabus content in preparation for final school exams. Classes are held on weekends during term time.

Year 11 EAL/D study 2025

Students intending to study English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) in Year 11 and 12 will be required to complete an online application for permission to enrol in this course. All decisions regarding eligibility are made by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Therefore, no enrolments can be made without such permission being granted by SCSA.

Year 11 Languages study 2025

All Year 10 students wishing to study a WACE language course in Year 11 and 12 are required to complete an online eligibility application for permission to enrol in a WACE language course. All decisions regarding eligibility are made by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Therefore, no enrolments can be made without such permission being granted by SCSA.

Language teachers will be assisting the boys to facilitate these applications from Week 10 of this term. The Head of Languages, Mr Marcus Sharp, can provide advice about this process – his contact number is 9442 1616.

The due date for all subject selections for Year 12 is Wednesday 24 July. The 2025 timetable will be constructed based on these selections.

Duty of Care – Absentees

A reminder to start the term; as a School, we have a Duty of Care regarding your son’s whereabouts during the school day. Your cooperation with the below steps is critical to ensuring your son is safe at all times and our duty of care absolute.
- Please ensure you have communicated to absentees PRIOR to your son leaving for an appointment.
- Your son MUST then sign out / sign in through the kiosk located in the Main Administration building to complete the verification process.
- Your son must be collected from outside Main Reception. Should they become unwell, they MUST sign out and be collected from the Health Centre.
Traffic reminder – Duty of Care

The car park parallel to Stirling Highway is a Staff Carpark. It is important that no parents park or collect students from this car park. Teachers involved in sport and co-curricular activities are trying to exit the carpark at the end of the day, and when held up this impacts the safety and care of students at off-site venues.

House Teams Carnival – 25 July

The House Teams Carnival, which was postponed at the end of Term 2 will now take place on Thursday 25 July from 1.30pm. Please confirm with your son what sport they are playing and see below for the correct venue.

Return bus transportation will be provided, however if your son is departing from the venue, please inform Absentees again before 5.00pm on Wednesday 24 July. Missed Assessments due to illness

With the winter months now here, this is a timely reminder of our assessment procedures if your son misses an assessment due to illness.

2.3 Absence from a scheduled assessment task in Years 10, 11 and 12 due to illness or injury must be ratified by a medical certificate (issued by a medical practitioner (not a pharmacist) other than a family member), submitted directly to the Studies Office within 48 hours of the day of the assessment. Boarders may provide a note from the School Medical Centre. The Studies Office will advise the relevant Head of House, tutor and teachers of the dates covered by the medical certificate and the student will be temporarily excused from the assessment but may be asked to complete it or a comparable assessment, following their return to school or later in the year, depending on the circumstances. ATAR subjects with practical component

A number of ATAR subjects include practical examinations as well as written examinations. Teachers talk to their students about all of these exams throughout the year; it is vital that boys understand that the School Curriculum and Standards Authority is very serious about enforcing the rules that govern the examinations for these practical components. All boys will be informed of the rules pertaining to their particular practical examination and this link provides the relevant information.

Teachers will, of course, work with students to assist them to comply with the rules, some of which are quite complex, but follow-up on past penalties has made it clear that SCSA ultimately regards it as the student’s responsibility to ensure that there are no breaches and it is, unfortunately, the student who is penalised for any such breaches. Such breaches are invariably penalised by a loss of marks – it is really important that candidates understand that SCSA is very serious about the rules and will apply them at all times.

For example, inclusion of the candidate’s name on a single piece of paper in a portfolio, inclusion of the school name, or submission of a portfolio that is over the page limit will all result in a loss of marks. Boys need to ensure they are very familiar with the rules for practical exams and portfolio submissions and that they comply with them scrupulously. Parents’ assistance in this regard is appreciated.

Important academic dates 2024

Year 12 is a fast and frenetic year – it is very helpful if parents, as well as boys, are aware of key academic dates, which can be found here.
Please take particular note that if your son is studying a subject with a practical exam, he must be available during the Term 3 holidays for this exam. SCSA issues these exam times and will not make alternative arrangements where the times are deemed inconvenient by parents. They also do not accede to parents’ requests for particular dates and times.
In short – please do not make any plans to travel interstate or overseas with your son during the Term 3 holidays!
