House Arts Grand Final
Ellington and Rock at Rosemount
Upholding student presentation

Today sees the grand final for the House Arts competition take place with points contributing to the Beatty Cup. I hope students have enjoyed this opportunity to participate in activities and represent their House, whether in Chess, Public Speaking, eSports, or as a supporter. The energy was also in full flight last Thursday in Assembly as the much-awaited House Shout songs were selected, with the competition taking place mid-next term.

Our musicians are busy rehearsing for The Ellington Jazz Night on Monday night followed by Rock at the Rosemount next Sunday afternoon. With Rock at the Rosemount including bands from Preparatory School to Year 12, if you are available, note the time in your calendar as I’m sure the students would love to see as many people as possible there.

As we near to the end of a long term, there has been reflection in the community about the standards of Christ Church’s student presentation. We have worked consistently to improve the respect of presentation standards with the students, but we still have a way to go. Please use the last couple of weeks and the holiday period to check the condition of your son’s uniform, in particular his tie and blazer, and organise any necessary hair appointments. I want to take this opportunity to thank you as parents for your support of our expectations around presentation standards.

Since the inaugural game in 2009, this event has become a cherished tradition that all students eagerly anticipate. Subject selection for Year 7 2025

During Week 1 of Term 3, all Year 6 parents will receive an email from Admissions containing subject selection information.

Please read the Academic Handbook that will be linked in the email, and then follow the link to complete your son’s subject selection. Only a Language (French, Japanese, Mandarin) and Music (General or Advanced) selection is required

Important: Music advanced is for students who can read music and play an instrument already. Music general is for those with no previous music experience outside of class lessons.

Year 7 parents are asked to note that reports for semesterised subjects will be made available at the end of Week 2 in Term 3. This enables teachers of these semesterised subjects to teach and assess until the end of the semester, thus making the most of the time available to them.

Due to weather conditions, the House Teams Carnival was postponed and has been rescheduled for Thursday 25 July, Week 2 of Term 3.

Complete Vaccinate WA online consent form – deadline extended until 31 July

The Western Australian Government’s School-Based Immunisation Program team are visiting Christ Church on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 August to offer the scheduled vaccinations to Year 7 students.

Parents who have not yet registered their son/s: Regardless of your decision to give or decline consent for your son to receive these vaccinations through this program, you must complete the Vaccinate WA online consent form by Wednesday 31 July. Please note the School has extended this deadline for an additional month to offer remaining parents ample opportunity to complete the form and the additional time to do so over the July school holidays.

The program consists of units aimed at reinforcing sound Study Skills as well as revision and re-teaching of Essay Writing skills which encompass a number of relevant genres such as creative, persuasive and analytical writing. For more information and bookings please visit the MMA website.

These small group sessions focussing on Maths and English offer students quality academic support which will reinforce and consolidate skills and processes learnt in class. Classes are held on weekends.

Students can enrol at any time during the term and simply pay pro rata. For more information and bookings please visit the MMA website

The Year 9 students recently completed a Study Skills program entitled ‘Memory Mnemonics’, which covered maximising attention, minimising distractions, memory and learning styles and semantic learning techniques.

Building Good Men Leadership Breakfast – Wednesday 17 July

All Year 10 and 11 students have been sent an invitation to attend the Building Good Men Leadership Breakfast. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with highly successful individuals who have overcome failures, celebrated successes and accomplished their big life goals. Due to weather conditions, the House Teams Carnival was postponed and has been rescheduled for Thursday 25 July, Week 2 of Term 3.

Missed Assessments due to illness

With the winter months now here, this is a timely reminder of our assessment procedures if your son misses an assessment due to illness.

2.3 Absence from a scheduled assessment task in Years 10, 11 and 12 due to illness or injury must be ratified by a medical certificate (issued by a medical practitioner (not a pharmacist) other than a family member), submitted directly to the Studies Office within 48 hours of the day of the assessment. Boarders may provide a note from the School Medical Centre. The Studies Office will advise the relevant Head of House, tutor and teachers of the dates covered by the medical certificate and the student will be temporarily excused from the assessment but may be asked to complete it or a comparable assessment, following their return to school or later in the year, depending on the circumstances. The assessment will be recorded as NA (Not Applicable) until such time as a final determination has been made.

2.5 Should students choose to sit an assessment on a date when they are covered by a Medical Certificate, or subsequently provide a Medical Certificate having sat the assessment, no review of results will be entertained.

2.6 Students who are ill and/or covered by a medical certificate and miss an assessment but then elect to attend a school activity or classes on the same day, will render the medical certificate null and void and will be awarded a zero for the missed assessment.

2.7 Students may have multiple assessments scheduled during a period covered by a medical certificate. In this situation, students should not sit any of these scheduled assessments. Students in this situation who elect to sit some of these assessments but not all will be awarded a zero for the assessments they choose not to sit.

2.8 Students who arrive late to school and subsequently sit a scheduled assessment will need to have either a medical certificate or a note from their attending physician to justify the late attendance at school. Students in this situation who are unable to provide this documentation will be awarded a zero for the assessment(s) they sit.

ATARget July Holiday Program – Year 10 Students Including OLNA Program

The program consists of units aimed at reinforcing sound Study Skills as well as revision and re-teaching of the Essay Writing skills needed to produce successful responses to exam-style questions where an extended written response is required. More details are available on the MMA website.

Term 3 ATARget Master Classes for Year 10 and 11 ATAR students

These small group sessions give ATAR students quality academic support which will reinforce and consolidate skills and processes learnt in class. They are an excellent way of consolidating syllabus content in preparation for final school exams. Classes are held on weekends during term time.

Year 11 EAL/D study 2025

Students intending to study English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) in Year 11 and 12 will be required to complete an online application for permission to enrol in this course. All decisions regarding eligibility are made by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Therefore, no enrolments can be made without such permission being granted by SCSA.

The EAL/D teacher, Ms Bee Choo, will coordinate this process. Her phone number is 9442 1609.

Year 11 Languages study 2025

All Year 10 students wishing to study a WACE language course in Year 11 and 12 are required to complete an online eligibility application for permission to enrol in a WACE language course. All decisions regarding eligibility are made by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Therefore, no enrolments can be made without such permission being granted by SCSA.

Language teachers will be assisting the boys to facilitate these applications from Week 10 of this term. The Head of Languages, Mr Marcus Sharp, can provide advice about this process – his contact number is 9442 1616.

School Photo Orders – place orders by end of July holidays

Information regarding photo orders and the packages available can be found by clicking here. To order school photos, please follow the instructions contained on the first page of the document. While Photo Hendricks keep this link active for parents who decide to order at a later stage, we recommend that parents place their orders for 2024 by the end of the July school holidays so that they can be proofed and distributed by the School. If ordered later in the year, they will be mailed to your address directly from Photo Hendricks which will incur a delivery fee.

This notice will be removed on the first week of Term 3.

Selection of subjects for Year 11

It will be helpful for parents to have an idea of the process that the School uses to guide students in regard to making choices for study in Year 11. More information will be made available via CCGS World and email as the term progresses.
- All Year 10s complete a careers education component as part of HWB in either Term 1 or 2
- All Year 10s are addressed by the Studies Office during a HWB class during Week 3 of Term 2
- The Year 10 Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews Online are scheduled for Monday 6 May from 3.45pm to 7.00pm.
- Year 10 parents are invited to a Parent Information presentation on Wednesday 22 May on choosing subjects for Year 11 (Week 6 of Term 2)
- Parents receive standardised testing results and a list of subjects offered in Year 11 2025 for each boy in Week 6 of Term 2
- Each boy and his parent/s will be invited to an interview with his Head of House and the Careers counsellor in Weeks 8, 9 or 10 of Term 2
- Subject selections are due to be finalised by students and parents by Week 2 of Term 3

Building Good Men Leadership Breakfast – Wednesday 17 July

All Year 10 and 11 students have been sent an invitation to attend the Building Good Men Leadership Breakfast. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with highly successful individuals who have overcome failures, celebrated successes and accomplished their big life goals. All students are expected to attend this event unless they have existing commitments. You can read more about the guest speakers here.

Reports for Term 2 will be issued via Nexus by the second week of the July school holidays. Parents will be advised by email when the reports are ready to be downloaded.

House Teams Carnival new date

Due to weather conditions, the House Teams Carnival was postponed and has been rescheduled for Thursday 25 July, Week 2 of Term 3.

Missed Assessments due to illness

With the winter months now here, this is a timely reminder of our assessment procedures if your son misses an assessment due to illness.

2.3 Absence from a scheduled assessment task in Years 10, 11 and 12 due to illness or injury must be ratified by a medical certificate (issued by a medical practitioner (not a pharmacist) other than a family member), submitted directly to the Studies Office within 48 hours of the day of the assessment. Boarders may provide a note from the School Medical Centre. The Studies Office will advise the relevant Head of House, tutor and teachers of the dates covered by the medical certificate and the student will be temporarily excused from the assessment but may be asked to complete it or a comparable assessment, following their return to school or later in the year, depending on the circumstances. The assessment will be recorded as NA (Not Applicable) until such time as a final determination has been made.

2.5 Should students choose to sit an assessment on a date when they are covered by a Medical Certificate, or subsequently provide a Medical Certificate having sat the assessment, no review of results will be entertained.

2.6 Students who are ill and/or covered by a medical certificate and miss an assessment but then elect to attend a school activity or classes on the same day, will render the medical certificate null and void and will be awarded a zero for the missed assessment.

2.7 Students may have multiple assessments scheduled during a period covered by a medical certificate. In this situation, students should not sit any of these scheduled assessments. Students in this situation who elect to sit some of these assessments but not all will be awarded a zero for the assessments they choose not to sit.

2.8 Students who arrive late to school and subsequently sit a scheduled assessment will need to have either a medical certificate or a note from their attending physician to justify the late attendance at school. Students in this situation who are unable to provide this documentation will be awarded a zero for the assessment(s) they sit.

The emphasis of these intensive revision courses will be on experienced teachers modelling how to answer examination questions successfully.

Year 11 and 12 students who have participated in recent years have reported how helpful these courses have been for them. Please click here to select and register for these revision courses.

These small-group sessions give students an opportunity to revise and enhance their understanding of the syllabus content they have studied in Terms 1 and 2 and for Year 12s, prepare them for their final school exams. The students will examine a range of ATAR-style questions and determine the strategies and processes required to construct successful responses.

Absence from Assessments

The School’s policy on students missing assessments is very clear.

Absence from scheduled assessment task(s) in Years 10, 11 and 12 due to illness or injury must be ratified by a medical certificate (issued by a medical practitioner (not a pharmacist) other than a family member), submitted directly to the Studies Office within 48 hours of the day of the assessment. Boarders may provide a note from the School Medical Centre. If a medical certificate is not supplied, the student will be awarded a zero for the missed assessment(s).

Students are not to be away from school on holidays during term time, as this does impact the quality of learning. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who miss an assessment(s) due to family holidays or other such unapproved leave will receive a mark of zero for the missed assessment(s).

ATAR subjects with practical component

A number of ATAR subjects include practical examinations as well as written examinations. Teachers talk to their students about all of these exams throughout the year; it is vital that boys understand that the School Curriculum and Standards Authority is very serious about enforcing the rules that govern the examinations for these practical components. All boys will be informed of the rules pertaining to their particular practical examination and this link provides the relevant information.

Teachers will, of course, work with students to assist them to comply with the rules, some of which are quite complex, but follow-up on past penalties has made it clear that SCSA ultimately regards it as the student’s responsibility to ensure that there are no breaches and it is, unfortunately, the student who is penalised for any such breaches. Such breaches are invariably penalised by a loss of marks – it is really important that candidates understand that SCSA is very serious about the rules and will apply them at all times.

For example, inclusion of the candidate’s name on a single piece of paper in a portfolio, inclusion of the school name, or submission of a portfolio that is over the page limit will all result in a loss of marks. Boys need to ensure they are very familiar with the rules for practical exams and portfolio submissions and that they comply with them scrupulously. Parents’ assistance in this regard is appreciated.

Important academic dates 2024

Year 12 is a fast and frenetic year – it is very helpful if parents, as well as boys, are aware of key academic dates, which can be found here.
Please take particular note that if your son is studying a subject with a practical exam, he must be available during the Term 3 holidays for this exam. SCSA issues these exam times and will not make alternative arrangements where the times are deemed inconvenient by parents. They also do not accede to parents’ requests for particular dates and times.
In short – please do not make any plans to travel interstate or overseas with your son during the Term 3 holidays!
