A big welcome back to our Senior School boys and staff, for Term 4. Although short, this term is going to be a busy one, with the summer sport season commencing, as well as the 30th anniversary of Venture.
Today, you may notice our students and staff wearing unusual socks. This inaugural Student Representative Council initiative encouraged our senior school to wear crazy socks to raise awareness about mental health. Socks hidden under pants, is somewhat similar to mental health, for some who still feel the need to hide these conditions. One day we may see everyone openly discuss mental health, just as you would with a physical injury or any other health issue. Almost one-fifth of all young people aged 11 to 17 experience high or very high levels of psychological distress. (Commissioner for Children and Young People WA. (2015). Our Children Can’t Wait – Review of the implementation of recommendations of the 2011 Report of the Inquiry into the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people in WA, Perth: Commissioner for Children and Young People.)

Mr Peter Thorne’s tenure as Head of Hill House for the past 13 years will conclude and be celebrated at the end of this term. After taking well-earned long service leave at the beginning of 2021, he will return in his capacity as a Senior Teacher in the Science Department. Peter has been an integral leader at Christ Church Grammar School for almost 26 years and will continue to be a role model for staff and students alike. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Peter for his time at the helm of Hill House. He remains humble and much loved by the boys; the Hill boys will farewell Peter this term. Congratulations to Ms Jane Shannon who has been appointed as the new Head of Hill House in 2021.
