At Christ Church, assessment is an integral part of the teaching cycle. Assessments are carefully constructed to enable judgements to be made about boys’ progress in ways that contribute to ongoing learning. Good assessments provide teachers with information about changes in student learning related to specific aspects of that learning area. Assessments help teachers better understand boys and their learning, what they need to learn next as well as identify any misunderstandings or misconceptions that the boys may be experiencing. It is this information that enables our teachers to plan programs that challenge boys to go beyond what they already know, understand or can do in order to build new knowledge, understandings and skills. There are several ways boys at Christ Church demonstrate their understandings including one-to-one conferencing, learning journals, performances, presentations, group work, written work, portfolios and teacher-devised tests as well as standardised assessments.

Next week we will be celebrating Ride to School Week in the Preparatory School. We will be encouraging all boys and families to jump on their bikes and ride to and from school. As parents and educators, we all play a important role in educating our boys about bike safety and riding to school. With our campus situated along Stirling Highway, I do encourage all families to discuss the importance of how to carefully cross intersections and use cycle friendly ways to enter the campus. As part of Ride to School Week, our Year 6 leaders will be on duty near the white umbrellas every morning to hand out raffle tickets to boys that ride their bikes. Boys receiving raffle tickets will be eligible to win daily prizes and will be notified in the bulletin. We look forward to seeing many boys riding their bikes to school next week.

The Year 4 boys took part in their first inter-school carnival today, participating in the Year 4 Cricket Carnival at St Johns Wood Playing Fields. The boys competed against Scotch College, Hale School and Aquinas College. Each week, the boys practice their skills in the lead up to each carnival and will participate in six carnivals over the year.

NAPLAN commenced today with all Year 3 and 5 boys completing their writing assessments with reading to follow tomorrow. Conventions of language and numeracy will take place during Week 8. Boys who are absent from their NAPLAN tests, will be provided with catch up sessions next week. For more information regarding NAPLAN, please click here
