Yesterday morning, we welcomed representatives from local organisations for an interactive session with our Year 10 students who have opted for an alternative pathway to the ATAR stream. This event provided an invaluable chance for students and their parents to engage directly with providers, ask questions, and explore a range of career paths, training programs, and employment options.

We were pleased to welcome old boy Tom Read (’22) as a guest speaker. Tom recently won the WA Apprentice of the Year award and was a finalist in the national competition. Nominated by his employer, Response Electricians, Tom began his journey with them during his time at Christ Church.

Tom’s interest in becoming an electrician began in Year 11 when he decided to pivot from a potential career in computer technology. Through a pre-apprenticeship program in electrical work, he was able to fast-track some of the TAFE requirements, enhancing his employability immediately after graduation. While at school, he also completed his white card certification, which has been integral to his work as an apprentice.

Tom said the School helped him to navigate and better understand the expectations of the industry.

“During my time at Christ Church, I learned universal skills like how to perform in a job interview, as well as essential skills specific to becoming an electrician.”

“The School set me up as much as possible and I just ran with it,” he said.

“My advice to current students would be you get out what you put in, work hard and don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help when you need it.”
