Christ Church Grammar School students took home the top prizes during this year’s WA Maths Olympiad, held at the University of Western Australia.
Aidan Lim (Year 9) and Haoyang Jin (Year 8) were announced as the top individual winners, with the School’s Year 9 team, consisting of Kenny Hao, Aidan Lim, Oscar Narvaez and Will Kempson, taking home the Jack Bana Award for most outstanding team in their year group. The prizes were awarded on the weekend following the Olympiad, which saw tough competition with almost 500 individual competitors and 116 teams from 25 schools.
The competition, where calculators are banned and the emphasis is on ‘brains only’, aims to identify the top young Maths students in the State in Years 7, 8 and 9.
Christ Church Grammar School Principal Alan Jones said he was delighted by the result.
“Congratulations to the boys for achieving this win after what was a tough competition,” he said.
“Christ Church’s Mathematics Department places a focus on providing the boys with opportunities to compete in state, national and international competitions such as the Olympiad, so it is fantastic to achieve such positive results.”
“A lot of preparation goes into these competitions, and this result is thanks to the tireless efforts of our fantastic teaching staff, parents and boys.”
“A particular thank you goes to our Head of Mathematics Megan West for her efforts in getting the boys ready for this competition.”
