Performance opportunities on show at combined concert

The annual Christ Church-St Hilda’s Combined Concert was held in St Hilda’s new performing arts centre last Friday evening. More than 600 people attended the concert with about 360 boys and girls performing.
Director of Music Kevin Gillam said the concert, which has traditionally been held in the Christ Church Chapel, was a highly successful night. Mr Gillam said the evening showcased the School’s Senior Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Senior Concert Band and Jazz Band 1.
Mr Gillam conducted the big opening piece, Carmina Burana (excerpts) by Carl Orff, featuring the CCGS Symphony and Chamber orchestras, and CCGS Yahoos, the Preparatory School choir trained by music teacher Sarah Seaman.
Other pieces ranged from classical to jazz with many boys involved in more than one choir, orchestra or band. “There were lots of happy parents on the night,” Mr Gillam said. “I think they are really pleased to see their sons given an opportunity to be part of multiple ensembles.”
