PMC celebrates Autism Awareness Day

The Peter Moyes Centre (PMC) marked Autism Awareness Day with organising a series of activities throughout the week, aimed at raising awareness, funds for important causes, and promoting inclusivity within the School community. Autism Awareness Day, recognised globally on 2 April, seeks to increase awareness of autism and highlight the experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum.
On Tuesday, the PMC hosted a special morning tea for the Senior School prefects, providing students with a chance to connect over delicious food and freshly brewed coffee from the Barista Boys. Launched last year, the Barista Boys initiative has offered PMC students valuable opportunities to develop essential skills such as customer service, communication, and teamwork. The coffee service, held on Wednesdays and Fridays, provides students with real-world hospitality experience while interacting with staff. This Friday, Year 12 students will be invited to purchase a cup of coffee, and the Baker Boys will also be selling freshly baked treats. All proceeds from the week’s activities will be donated to Spectrum Space, a local organisation supporting individuals on the autism spectrum.
Amy Porter, PMC Co-ordinator said, “At Christ Church, we are fortunate to have a diverse community of students, staff, and families to celebrate and give a voice to during our Autism Awareness Week celebrations. This diversity challenges us to adapt our teaching methods, collaborate more effectively, slow down, and show empathy and understanding.”
She continued, “It encourages us to see the world from different perspectives,” and quoted Temple Grandin, the renowned American scientist and autistic individual: “I am different, not less.”
