100 years of athletics
Published on: 4 September 2015
In 2015 we celebrate the 100th anniversary since Christ Church students first competed in the House Athletics Carnival. This year, Hill House was victorious for the second year in a row, winning the Akos Kovac Shield with 1955.5 points, followed by Jupp (1935.5), Craigie (1845.5), Queenslea, Romsey, Moyes, Wolsey and Noake.
1916 headmaster, Mr Stephen Noake, first established the House Athletics Carnival, believing the systematic use of school games improved boys’ physique and taught virtues of self-control, self-discipline and self-sacrifice. To encourage greater enthusiasm in games, Noake divided the School into three sections (or Houses) for the ‘inter-section competition’.
100 years on, the carnival is looking stronger than ever, with boys competing in a variety of track and field events. The following boys were awarded trophies:
Staff Cup (winner of open 100m) | Jake Stergiou (Moyes) |
