Christ Church’s First VI goes head-to-head with Wesley College this weekend in the battle for top spot in the PSA Badminton. Both undefeated, but with Wesley ahead on points, the two schools will meet for the first time in the 2014 Brother Kelly Cup season.

Historically, Wesley has been the dominant school in the badminton competition, winning the title nine times since it was introduced as a PSA sport in 2002. Christ Church has not been far behind, winning the title in 2003, finishing in second place five times and in third place three times.

Out or 45 matches, Christ Church has lost two games, something Firsts and Seconds coach Nick Kidd attributes to the boys’ great work ethic. Nick, a professional coach with a stellar international career, began coaching the Firsts and Seconds last year but has been teaching badminton as part of the Year 12 Physical Education curriculum for the past four years.

Nick, who represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games and is a three-time Australian and two-time English national champion, said it was great to see boys staying with the sport. He said Christ Church had been very supportive of the badminton program and the boys were getting the results they had been working hard for.

“The boys have a really good chance on the day and they know it,” he said. “It will come down to solid partnerships and good consistent performances all the way down the line.”

See the First VI and Second VI, who is also undefeated, in action against Wesley this Saturday at Wesley College Gymnasium from 9.00am.
