This week the School has been celebrating National Science Week with a range of engaging and educational activities on offer for students. This year’s theme ‘Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability’ aims to emphasise the crucial role of science and innovation in not only ensuring the survival of various species but also fostering their ability to thrive in our rapidly changing world.

Students have immersed themselves in a variety of activities designed to deepen their understanding of this important theme. Highlights have included interactive lunchtime quizzes, a Bayliss Youth Lecture with Physical Chemist Elodie Rousset, and Chemistry Breakfast at Methodist Ladies’ College with their students, maritime excursions, and lock box challenges, which tested and expanded students’ knowledge in a fun and competitive environment. Additionally, we were thrilled to welcome a special visit from ‘Critters Up Close’. This unique experience allowed students to interact with a fascinating array of furry and reptilian creatures, bringing the wonders of biodiversity directly into the classroom and sparking curiosity about the natural world. Students gained a hands-on appreciation of the intricate connections between species and the environment, underscoring the vital importance of sustainability and conservation efforts in safeguarding our planet’s future.

Head of Science Megan Caporn said the week provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore the wonders of science in a way that went beyond the classroom.

“National Science Week is important because it fosters a sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around us, encouraging students to think critically about the challenges we face in preserving our planet’s biodiversity,” she said

“By engaging with the theme, students are reminded of the pressing need to develop innovative solutions to ensure the long-term survival of species in the face of climate change, habitat loss, and other environmental pressures. The week is also an important reminder of the role education plays in shaping future leaders and innovators.”
