Our music scholars presented their annual Music Scholars’ Recital last Tuesday 13 June with all performers showcasing phenomenal talent throughout the evening.

Held in the Collaborative Learning Centre (CLC), the evening opened with Joshua Chen on cello, performing a passionate account of Faure’s Requiem, followed by Andrew Triglavcanin with the lively Irish Legend on violin.

Zachary Cheng (clarinet) and Joseph Kuek (violin) played pieces by Weber and Sinding with considerable polish, and Christian Wong performed on viola with a very resonant rendition of Elegie by Glazounov.

This followed with Brendan Lock singing two theatrical pieces in beautiful baritone voice and William Ji (cello) performing the very difficult Inner World by Carl Vine.

Other highlights from the Music Scholars’ Recital included:

  • Oliver Terry (clarinet) and Daniel Zhou (violin) on clarinet and violin respectively, performing pieces by Messager and Bruch, both with real virtuosity and flair
  • William Hu (piano) with four small self-composed pieces, all superbly executed

The evening concluded with Gus McKenzie’s sultry vocals and guitar playing on Layla and From the Morning, followed by a brilliant performance of Scherzo No 4 (Chopin) by Daniel Mah.

“Our music scholarship students are real leaders within each of their ensembles, and their performances in the recital all demonstrate true artistry and many hours of dedicated practice”, says Director of Music, Mr Kevin Gillam.
