St George’s Cathedral welcomed nine of Christ Church’s finest young musicians this week as part of their annual Concerts at One performance series.

Opening the concert was an emotionally engaging rendition of Chopin’s Ballade No 1 by Jeremiah Wang (Year 7), followed by the technical wizardry of Daniel Zhou (Year 10) on violin with Caprice Viennois by Kreisler.

Arjun Rodriguez (Year 6) our youngest performer delivered four short pieces from his upcoming AMEB exam, featuring a variety of styles and tempi that was well embraced by audiences.

Other accomplished performances during the concert included:

  • a chamber music item comprising of Years 9 and 10 musicians with the very famous Bach Double Violin Concerto
  • Joshua Chen (Year 9) on ‘cello performing the fiendishly difficult Kabalevsky Cello Concerto
  • Jun Yang Yap (Year 9) with Chopin’s Fantasie Impromptu
  • William Ji (Year 9) with Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D major

“The large lunchtime audience at St George’s Cathedral showed a great deal of appreciation,” said Director of Music, Mr Kevin Gillam.

“It was very pleasing to see our young musicians demonstrate their skill and musicianship, all performing very advanced repertoire.”

“A special thanks goes to our two accompanists Martina Liegat-Wilson and Dr Martin Lamb, and to the instrumental tutors for their support of these fine performers.”

The Music Department looks forward to presenting its next event, the Scholar’s Recital Night on Tuesday 11 June at 7.00pm in the School’s Collaborative Learning Centre (CLC).
