Year 10 students embark on an ethical hacking excursion
Published on: 4 November 2021
On Monday a group of Year 10 students visited the ECU Joondalup campus to better understand the world of cyber security.
During the excursion to the university’s Cyber Security Research Institute, the boys met with current Cyber Security PhD students who are working on a range of projects, including Penetration Testing (legally trying to break into corporate IT systems to expose any security weaknesses).
An ECU lecturer who worked in Counter Terrorism then delivered a lecture on Security and Intelligence, and the key aspects of the university’s Bachelor of Counter Terrorism Security and Intelligence degree.
The WA Police’s Open Source Intelligence Gathering (OSINT) team also spoke, describing how they approach investigating suspects using information that can be freely found on the internet, looking at social media profiles and other sources.
They also learned about the work of cyber security company Sapien Cyber who invited the boys to visit a real life Security Operations Centre where top secret security operations are carried out.
