This past weekend, the final House group of Year 9 students proudly celebrated their graduation from the On Queenslea Drive (OQD) program, a cornerstone of Christ Church’s ‘Making of Men’ initiative. The program, unique to the School, provides students with the tools they need to navigate their transition to young adulthood while fostering personal growth, resilience, and leadership.

OQD, which includes a campus live-in component, gives students a chance to balance their academic responsibilities with immersive life skills development. Over the course of 16 days, the students participate in activities aimed at helping them explore their identities, reflect on relationships, and develop a deeper understanding of their roles as emerging leaders.

Chris Miles, Head of the Year 9 On Queenslea Drive Program, reflected on the program’s impact, stating, “I always knew OQD would have a significant impact on the boys, but upon reflection, it’s clear that its reach extends far beyond that. It has strengthened family dynamics and made a lasting impact on the broader school community.”

This year’s program also saw a transition to new accommodations at Knutsford House, which provided students with an upgraded living environment.

The OQD graduates expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, recalling the unique challenges and personal growth they experienced. David Lamb said, “The Year 9 Craigie community is forever grateful for the wonderful opportunity that the OQD program provided. From waking up at 6.00am in the cold to exercise at the Hurt Locker boxing facility to participating in yoga, we embraced every challenge and created unforgettable memories.”

Jacques Sahel shared his appreciation for the program’s emphasis on self-discovery, stating, “We learned a lot about each other through sharing our experiences in a safe space. No one was judged differently, and this allowed us to form deeper bonds. Though it was compulsory, I’m sure the boys would jump at the chance to do it again.”

Max Georgiou called OQD “the most unique, memorable, and enjoyable activity” of his ten years at Christ Church. He noted the program’s impact on building resilience, respect, and independence, saying, “Living and interacting with my housemates 24/7 encouraged stronger bonds and friendships that will last beyond our schooling years.”

The On Queenslea Drive program continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Christ Church students, equipping them with the skills, character, and values necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. As these young men move forward, the lessons and friendships fostered during the program will undoubtedly remain with them throughout their lives.
