Domenic Venturi-Leach (Yr 7) and Hawk Hughes (Yr 10) won first prize in their age group in the Geography Association of Western Australia’s ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ Competition.

The 2021 competition challenged students to explore geographical change in Australia and the concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection and sustainability.

Domenic’s winning project looked at the liveability of Subiaco, how it has changed over time and some urban planning strategies that could be used to improve the area. Judges said his work was “Exceptionally detailed and structured” and that he had an “eye for great urban planning”.

Hawk investigated the changing coastline of the Port Geographe area and used concepts such as longshore drift to explain the impacts seen in the area over time. Judges remarked on his “outstanding grasp of geographical skills and concepts” and his “strong use of photographic evidence”.

Teacher Mr Jon Wyllie said he was “immensely proud of the boys for their hard work”. Both students came away with a $250 cash prize for topping the state.
