First XVIII reunion

What a great day weather-wise at James Battye Oval where the Old Boys’ banner was out proudly with OBA President Adam Collins (1987) cooking up hot dogs for those in attendance. Current First XVIII coach John Dimmer had invited Doug Meikle (1971), Captain of the 1971 Alcock Cup winning team, to meet the 2014 Firsts team and address them before the game. The boys jumped out of the blocks to kick the first goal against Scotch in next to no time. Despite kicking the first goal in each of the first three quarters, the final score line was a little disappointing. Doug noted a couple of interesting players, including one from Broome with blistering speed as well as Calen Simpson-Lewis (Year 11), who is the son of Cameron Lewis (1979) and grandson of the legendary Irwin Lewis (1956). John Cramer (1971) and Doug enjoyed a wonderful morning tea at halftime, meeting former Eagle Ryan Turnbull (1988) and Joe Fisher (1977) among others in attendance. Ric Charlesworth (1969) and a host of other old boys were also there, many supporting sons and grandsons, which was nice to see. Perhaps there will be a combined 1971, 1974 and 1977 reunion day organised in the coming years to celebrate all our Alcock Cup wins. Pictured are John Cramer, Doug Meikle and Adam Collins.
